Mobile phones changing the information dissemination landscape

By Salamatu Mansaray

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our lives, serving as powerful tools for communication and information dissemination. However, the misuse of these devices, particularly among the youth, is a growing concern.

The power and pitfalls of mobile phones

In Sierra Leone, like in many other nations, mobile phones are seen as a potent weapon for national development. Yet, their misuse can lead to negative consequences. For instance, inciting people to engage in harmful activities through mobile phones sends out a negative message. Imagine the impact of a voice recording urging people to take to the streets in protest. Such actions not only disrupt peace but also hamper economic activities, affecting both private and public sectors.

A case in point is the August 10 protest. The unrest that day prevented the government from generating necessary resources, as youths, misusing their mobile phones, took to the streets. The negative impact of such actions on the country is undeniable.

A call for responsible use

As a youth and a citizen of Sierra Leone, I urge my fellow youths to use our mobile phones positively for the development of our nation. We must refrain from using these devices to incite others towards actions that could lead to the destruction of our nation.

The role of training

As an intern student, I see the value of training in addressing this issue. I am eager to receive firsthand training from the DEPA project and hope they can conduct another set of training at my office at the Patriotic Advocacy Network. This would not only benefit me but also other youths.

There is a saying that when you train one person, you are able to train two. But if you are able to train a group of people, you are able to train a nation. I believe that through such training, we can learn to use our mobile phones responsibly and positively, thereby contributing to the development of our society and nation.
